This was a newly created role and a critical hire for the newly appointed Marketing Director. Medica is a healthcare organisation trusted to partner with more than 50% of NHS Trusts. Their high-quality service delivery and clinical governance makes Medica the partner of choice for over 200 clients worldwide. The business is operating in an industry where clear, consistent communication plays a critical role in day-to-day effectiveness and long-term performance.  

Following the appointment of a new Marketing Director, the business took the opportunity to review how communications were working across the organisation. They found that internal communications lacked structure and consistency, leaving employees less connected to what was happening across the business. Similar challenges existed with external stakeholder communications. 

Challenge: Onboarding a newly created communications role

Creating a dedicated senior communications role was identified as a crucial step in improving communications and engagement across the organisation.  

As the Senior Communications Manager role did not previously exist, Medica needed to hire a communications professional who could operate independently with confidence in a regulated environment. Due to the nuances of the brief, Medica understood the benefits of engaging a specialist communications recruiter who knew the talent market, the skillsets available, and how to competitively position the role. 

Plus, as the internal talent team was stretched across multiple priorities, engaging the right external support was essential to deliver the hire at pace. 3Search was engaged as a consultative partner to shape the role as well as lead on the search.

Specialist communications recruiter, Matthew Stevenson, supported Medica end-to-end. He began with the creation and refinement of the job specification, providing detailed market insight on candidate availability, experience levels, and salary benchmarking to guide internal conversations around scope and budget. 

Once the job description was approved, we went to market, quickly delivering a shortlist of six high-quality candidates. All candidates on the shortlist were invited to first-stage interviews, with three progressing to later stages. Ultimately, the search resulted in the appointment of Medica’s new Senior Communications Manager.

Medica appointed a standout candidate who met the technical requirements of the role and was also a strong cultural fit for the organisation. Being based locally to Medica’s Hastings head office added significant value for an internal communications-focused position.
